Prakash Sherpa, founder of Alpinist Climber Expeditions and IFMGA Mountain Guide, and the alpinist Christian De Jong from Netherlands summited Pumori, a 7,161m peak, in alpine style. Though they faced challenging winds, they never gave up on their climb. The route was icy with many crevasses, but they still enjoyed the climb. The climb began from Camp 2 at midnight, a strategic decision to optimize their chances of success. Adopting a light and fast approach, they chose not to rely on fixed ropes, carrying only the essential gear and supplies needed for their alpine-style endeavour. This style of climbing requires excellent physical fitness, technical skills, and a deep understanding of the mountain environment.

Prakash and Christian’s previous accomplishments, including their successful alpine-style climbs of Kyajo Ri (6,186m) and Cholatse (6,440m) in Spring 2022, served as valuable preparation for tackling the demanding ascent of Pumori in Alpine Style. Their collective experience and expertise allowed them to make calculated decisions, ensuring their safety and the success of their expedition. The key for their success is not only the skills but the communication and management during the climb.

Prior to their Pumori summit bid, they embarked on an expedition to Island Peak. Climbing Island Peak served as a crucial step in their acclimatization strategy. Rising to an elevation of 6,189 meters, Island Peak provided a challenging yet manageable ascent that allowed them to adapt to the altitude and conditions they would later encounter on Pumori. After successfully summiting Island Peak, Prakash and Christian spent several days in Everest Base Camp. This period allowed them to fine-tune their physical stamina, adjust to the high-altitude environment, and mentally prepare for the demanding alpine-style climb that awaited them on Pumori.

The climb started from Pumori high camp 5,650m and involved ascending steep ice and rock walls, traversing crevasses, and navigating through challenging terrain. They skipped Camp 1 as it is located under many searches. They rested at Camp 2 for a few hours, and 12:30 at night they left for the summit. Facing challenging winds and adverse conditions, Prakash and Christian demonstrated unwavering determination and a strong mountaineering spirit throughout their climb. The route presented icy sections and numerous crevasses, adding an extra layer of difficulty to their ascent. However, their passion for the mountains and their extensive climbing experience enabled them to overcome these challenges and reach the summit at 7:07 in the morning.
